Francis
Liu,
With an inclination for
eclectic and innovative projects, violinist Francis Liu
chooses to play music ranging from early Baroque to the
latest contemporary pieces. Mr. Liu was a founding member of
the Adelphi String Quartet, which served as the graduate
quartet-in-residence at the University of Maryland School of
Music from 2009-2011. With the quartet, Mr. Liu performed at
the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the Washington
Arts Club, and the Smithsonian American History Museum. In
2009, he joined with the Axelrod Quartet for a performance
of the Mendelssohn Octet on the Smithsonian museum's
collection of Stradivarius and Amati instruments. With
members of the quartet,
Mr. Liu recently completed a recording of Walter Gieseking's
rediscovered Kleine Musik, which will be released on the
Naxos label.
In addition to his work with the quartet, Mr. Liu has given
performances at the Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center
and the Haydn 2009 festival at the Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts. He has performed with the Inscape Chamber Orchestra,
the Fairfax Symphony, the Annapolis Chamber Players, and the
Baltimore early music ensemble, Pro Musica Rara. Fond of
working with living
composers, Mr. Liu has also appeared at the Bang on a Can
Summer Music Festival, where he played in a marathon concert
celebrating to the music of Steve Reich.
Mr. Liu received his doctorate from the University of
Maryland, studying with David Salness. He completed his
bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Shepherd School of
Music at Rice University, where he was a student of Kenneth
Goldsmith. He has engaged in chamber music studies with the
Diaz
Trio, as well as the Guarneri, Cleveland, Audubon, Orion,
and Kronos Quartets.
